The greening of personal hygiene is not a new phenomenon, and we’ve all seen oodles of brands for environmentally-friendly soaps, shampoos, lotions and deodorants. They’re not hard to find and quite often are reasonably priced.
But natural or organic makeup isn’t quite as prevalent just yet, and it can be a little tougher finding good cosmetic products with the organic ingredients you want.
Regardless of the specific brands of organic cosmetics you choose to go with, you want to avoid certain chemical ingredients like:
- Petroleum jelly (aka petrolatum)
- Mineral oil
- Artificial colors or preservatives
Stick with plant-based or naturally occurring minerals for the safest products. If you’re not sure about some ingredients, take the time to do some research before you buy.
Be prepared to spend a little more when you make your makeup purchases, but these quality products are worth it. In many cases, the better ingredients mean that your products last longer and require fewer touch-ups through the day so their costs do balance out over the long term.
Available through stores like Whole Foods, the Gabriel makeup line includes all the classic cosmetic products (mascara, lipstick, eyeshadow, foundation) and they have a non-toxic nail polish collection as well. The colors are rich and long-lasting, but contain no mineral oils or talc. Ingredients such as jojoba seed oil, natural China clay, coconut oil and iron oxide are found in products like their Gabriel Blush. Everything is vegan and cruelty-free as well. Gabriel also carries an organic line of other skin care products with natural plant extracts.
Ecco Bella goes well beyond simple makeup, and you can stick with their brand for hair care, fragrances and other body products too. For their makeup lines, the deep color comes from natural floral waxes and earth minerals rather than from chemicals. Natural oils and herbal extracts give all their products a smooth and creamy finish. Their Flowercolor line of lipstick, for example, keeps your lips moist with a mix of vitamin E oil, calendula oil and even herbal chamomile oil. The cosmetics at Ecco Bella are professional-quality and are wonderfully natural for the everyday girl too.
Organic, natural and cruelty-free cosmetics are what Lavera has to offer though their lines extend beyond makeup into hair, bath and children’s products too. They’ve stuck with classic color palettes so you can use their products for day or night, and you always look stylish. Floral extracts and mineral pigments bring the color, and joboba oil keeps everything moist. Their Trend Sensitive Volume Mascara uses natural iron oxides and silicas for coloring, and vegetable based glycerin for glide-on smoothness. Lavera products are a personal favorite of mine, and I try to stick with them whenever I’m shopping for something new.
This is one organic makeup brand that stands out because it can be bought at big drugstore chains like Shoppers Drug Mart and has the lowest price tags in the field. So Physicians Formula is often a favorite among the budget-conscious shoppers out there but you have to look for their Organic Wear line specifically for the most natural products. Not only can you get blushers, bronzers, mascara and other cosmetics, they have a few excellent skin care products in Organic Wear too.
You could easily outfit your entire bathroom with Dr. Hauschka products but let’s focus on their makeup offerings for the moment. Eyes, lips and face can all be treated to a dash of muted color from one of their signature cosmetic products though they stick to a very simple palette of colors. This is a really good brand for the minimalist who isn’t looking for anything fancy. Powdered silk is a common ingredient in their products, such as their Skin Care Eye Shadow Palette, and it adds extra smoothness and coverage.
It was actually kind of hard to pick the top 5 since there are so many good organic makeup brands out there. I thought I’d give a few honorable mentions to Nvey Eco, Revolution Organics and Afterglow. Pure & True has a wonderful collection of lotions, masks, scrubs and moisturizers that aren’t really “makeup” but deserve a little praise too.
With all of these natural makeup choices, you should be able to treat your face with the organic care it deserves.
