How Do GU10 LED Bulbs Compare to Halogen?

GU10 LED bulbs have been gaining a lot of publicity lately. Still, most individuals don’t really know how they truthfully compare to standard halogen bulbs. The other huge benefit to LED GU10 bulbs is that they last much longer than their halogen counterparts. This can be anywhere from 10 to 40 times longer depending on the specifics of what you’re selecting and replacing. Typical GU10 LED bulbs can last anywhere from 30,000 to 80,000 hours.

One of the drawbacks to GU10 LED bulbs is their high upfront cost. They will set you back a decent chunk of change as compared to halogen bulbs when you buy them. In fact, switching just one halogen bulb to LED can save you hundreds of dollars over the life of the bulb.

Other concerns about GU10 LED bulbs focus around their light quality and their versatility. While more LEDs are being equipped to work with dimming capabilities than previously, many still do not provide this feature. Also, an LED is generally going to be less bright than equivalent halogen bulbs, and will work better as a focal point style of light as opposed to casting light over a surface. Finally, the color temperatures are higher for comparable LED bulbs than they are for halogen light bulbs.

With all of that said, most consumers and homeowners find that switching to GU10 LED bulbs is an easy choice to make. The extremely low energy usage and consumption coupled with the extremely high bulb lifetime make them the choice for the eco friendly house that can save you a substantial amount of money as well.

Especially as federal regulations crack down on energy efficiency in lighting, its becoming a pressing issue to stay on top of what technology is the most efficient and what the drawbacks are. Its also beneficial to stay ahead of the curve so that as upfront costs like for the LED lights you mentioned go down as they become more common, consumers can jump on the bandwagon as soon as possible!
