Adopt An Animal Through The National Wildlife Federation

by Owner on June 12, 2009

Anyone with even a passing interest in environmentalism is well aware of how wildlife is in crisis everywhere. From whale poaching to seal clubbing, from over-fishing to over-hunting, from drowning polar bears to chemically mutated frogs–there is no corner of this planet left unthreatened by habitat destruction or wildlife extinction due to mankind’s expanding footprint and impending climate change.

Wildlife is in desperate need of champions to advocate on its behalf, and one of its most outspoken defenders is the US’s National Wildlife Federation. The NWF is deeply involved at the state and federal level to pass comprehensive legislation to combat global warming, conserve precious habitats, protect natural resources, and ensure clean water in our nation’s waterways. The NWF’s work is absolutely vital to protect and restore natural habitats and ensure a legacy of healthy wildlife on our planet for our children and future generations.

As a non-profit, NWF is always in need of money to continue its mission, so it has created an “adopt an animal” program to help fund its programs. The program is symbolic, not literal, so you would be helping to fund NWF’s general mission (and not specific animals in the wild). But the program does allow you to “adopt” certain animal species. Depending on your purchase level you will receive a plush stuffed animal of the species you picked, a screen saver, a field bag, and a certificate of adoption. The species available are the polar bear, moose, Canadian lynx, gray wolf, harp seal, river otter, American goldfinch, snowshoe hare, grizzly bear, Florida panther, desert tortoise, barking tree frog, bison, and orca. They also have more expensive options for “threatened species” and “imperiled species” that get you multiple plushes, a lunch cooler, and fleece blanket. Finally, they have an “adopt a baby animal” program (most suitable for children) that comes with a baby animal plush, a story card and a birth certificate!

These things are small momentos that will remind you of the good work you are funding by purchasing one of these “adopt an animal” packages from NWF. Its mission is enormous in scope, almost insurmountable, but absolutely vital in helping to ensure a future that isn’t devoid of many of the animal species we know and love. Please consider supporting them.

And now I’m going to mercilessly play on your heartstrings with this video of adorable baby otters I stumbled across this week on YouTube (which inspired me to write this article.) They’re incredibly cute, and serve to remind us of the importance of what we’re fighting for. Enjoy!

You bet! You folks do great work.

I see you own the Ranger Rick magazine–I used to read that as a kid. :) I’ll blog about that at some point.
